Global warming is real. In recent years people worldwide are taking notice. They are searching for reasons why this is happening and wanting to know how it can be stopped and what they can do to help reduce the damage. The top ten known causes are:
Power Plants
Coal, natural gas and oil are all used in power plants and they release dangerous carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and the worst part is that every time we switch on a light, we are sending this dangerous gas into our air.
Pollution from Cars
As well as carbon, motor vehicles release other pollutants into the air as well and with over 3 billion motor vehicles world wide this is a very damaging problem.
Diesel from Trucks
Diesel is more polluting than petrol so, although there are fewer trucks than cars, the damage to our air from truck emissions is phenomenal. As yet, no real alternative has been found.
Plane Pollution
About 10% of green house gas emissions are from airplanes, yet we have come to depend on them greatly, not only to get to holidays but businessmen use planes to get across the country and indeed overseas to meet the demands of international business.
Our Homes
In our homes, we use electricity made from coal and we burn oil. We need these, not only for cooking but also for heating and cooling. In order to keep its use as low as possible, people are being urged to be more vigilant in the way it is used. Also, many architects and builders are now using better materials and building in a way so as to reduce the need for prolonged artificial heating. Governments are also imposing tougher regulations on builders.
Methane
Methane is approximately 60 times stronger than carbon dioxide and is stored in our oceans and also in ice. It is only released when the temperature rise and pressure is reduced. If earth’s temperature increases to a certain point, the results may be catastrophic.
Nitrous Oxide
It is believed that nitrous oxide has roughly 310 times the effect on global warming than carbon dioxide. No one knows what causes Nitrous oxide or why its presence has increased but it is thought by some that the increase could be caused by sunspot activity or the thinning of the ozone layer.
Deforestation
The cutting down and clearing of forests to make way for housing, industry and farming has caused immeasurable damage and contributed to global warming on a grand scale. Trees and plants absorb carbon from the air so when these forests are cleared the loss of the benefits of forest areas is of great concern.
Traffic Snarls
Imagine 2 hour wait to go a short distance of only a few miles, cars starting and stopping only to move the few inches is a nightmare for the environment. Many have said that building bigger wider roads would help but this may just attract more users.
Carbon in Atmosphere and Ocean
When the black carbon, carried by prevailing winds floats over the ocean, the ocean is unable to absorb the heat of the sun thus reflecting it back, which increases the temperature of the earth.
