I've spent hours reading thousands of words on this subject. Has it made a difference to the environment? Sadly not - that requires action. But one thing I can do is help you to cut to the chase and put my research to good use. Go straight to my top 10 ways to stop global warming article.

If you'd like to make a real difference with minimal effort and are prepared to pay someone else to do it for you (sounds good to me!) then your best bet is to offset your carbon through tree planting or renewable energy projects.
Food scraps, garden waste and plant-based products like paper create methane when they breakdown without oxygen (anaerobic). Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas which can be reduced by diverting waste from going to landill. Ther a two effective ways of doing this: Reduce, Reuse or Recycle everything possible and Compost all of you organic household waste.
When trees are growing they photosynthesise and draw CO2 from the atmosphere releasing oxygen in it's place - that's a good thing! Saving existing forests from logging doesn't require you to chain youself to a tree trunk, just be a little more careful in how much paper you use and how you use it - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Save paper and you'll save trees.
Plant trees yourself or get someone else to do it for you. There are many organisations involved in tree planting projects that will plant some for you for a fee. This helps offset the carbon that you and your lifestyle produce.
