What is World Environment Day 2007
World Environment Day 2007 is celebrated every June 5th to encourage global awareness regarding the environment, drawing in hoped action and attention from world countries and their governments. This year Tromsų, Norway, hosted the event, focusing on 'Melting Ice- A Hot Topic' theme.
This was also meant to support the International Polar Year, whilst drawing world attention to increasing concerns regarding the communities and ecosystems in the Polar Regions and the subsequent consequences that the melting ice caps will have on the planet.
World media broadcast the major issues to people around the world. It put everyone's attention on the very serious environmental problems:
- Encouraging individual action in sustainability and developmental equitability
- Creating understanding amongst world communities that they are central in environmental problem, attitude changes
- Advocating a partnership amongst all countries and people to guarantee a more prosperous and safer future for everyone
What can you do to help celebrate this day in the future?
You can help support World Environment Day in varied ways. You can arrange varied activities for your community and schools that:
- draw attention to the conditions within the environment
- create an agenda for the UNEP theme
- assess any actions needed to protect the environment
- start groups fulfill these actions
- create a daily/weekly environmental protection routine for your neighborhood
Other exciting and positive ways to protect the environment include:
- Create art from recycled items; have an art gallery showing, and invite the media and the public
- Create community awards for outstanding environmental type activities for children, adults, companies and other organizations
- Start campaigns to present to government representatives at all levels
- Encourage the use of carpools or the use of mass public transport
- Contact local or major stars and celebrities to support your campaigns and events with media attention
- Hold free, public conferences and community meetings to discuss environmental issues and actions
- Distribute environmental awareness posters, brochures and leaflets to businesses and homes
- Join an environmental organization or group yourself
- Clean-up your home and your local neighborhood
- Read about environmental issues
- Host an organic cooking event
- Gather local musicians, writers and other talented people in your neighborhood for community performances to promote environmental awareness - invite celebrities, local councilmen and the media
- Incorporate environmental issue puppet shows into local fairs and events for children
- Start rainwater harvesting
- Start gray water recycling
- Recycle by reusing everything
- Help to create community gardens to grow organic foods and plants
- Buy new trees with your neighbors and plant them in front of the media in less green areas of your town or city
- Create t-shirts with World Environment Day type photos; sell these through local stores
- Start local jogging, cycling and walking days each week
- Lower your vehicle emission by using greener fuels or by saving up to by an electric vehicle
- Start composting
- Volunteer to clean-up your neighborhood
